Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage Plans

Start with the basics: what Parts A, B and C cover, and where Medicare Advantage fits in.

The basics

Medicare Parts A, B and C

Original Medicare is Part A and Part B. Part C is the Medicare Advantage option.

Part A

Hospital insurance

Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care.

Part B

Medical insurance

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services and medical equipment.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

A private plan that includes Parts A and B, and often prescription drugs and extra benefits.

Part D is prescription drug coverage. It can be a separate plan or included in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Part C explained

How Part C works

Medicare Advantage is a way to get your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company approved by Medicare. You get your Part A and Part B coverage in one plan, and many plans add prescription drug coverage and extras.

  • You must have Medicare Parts A and B
  • You generally keep paying your Part B premium
  • Costs and benefits vary by plan and location

Plan types

Common plan types

Each type works a little differently, especially around doctors and referrals.

HMO

Network-based care

Uses a network of doctors and hospitals. You usually choose a primary care doctor and get referrals to see specialists.

PPO

More flexibility

You can see providers outside the network, though costs are often lower when you stay in network.

SNP

Special Needs Plans

Designed for specific situations, such as certain chronic conditions or people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Extra benefits

Extra benefits many plans offer

What’s included depends on the plan, so I check the details for your area.

Dental

Routine checkups and cleanings on many plans.

Vision

Eye exams and allowances for glasses or contacts.

Hearing

Hearing exams and hearing aid allowances.

Fitness

Gym memberships and wellness programs on some plans.

Not every plan includes every benefit. Prescription drug coverage is included in most Medicare Advantage plans.
